What is a Direct Support Worker?

A Direct Support Worker, must be at least 18 years of age. You are hired and supervised by a person to assist them with activities of daily living. Some of the duties might be assisting them with eating, dressing, preparing meals, bathing, toileting (catheter irrigation included), transferring, or any activity that would ensure the health and safety of a person.

What is the DSW responsible for doing?

You work for the Consumer and are responsible for:

  1. Performing tasks as assigned and trained by the consumer, according to the Attendant Care Worksheet, in a professional manner.
  2. Being punctual and appropriately dressed.
  3. Observing rules of confidentiality.
  4. Giving as much notice as possible if unable to come to work (at least 12 hours) and calling if going to be more than 10 minutes late.

Who decides what tasks are to be performed?

The tasks you are to perform will be listed on an Attendant Care Worksheet. The person you work for will establish a work schedule with you.

What is the role of LINK as Financial Management Services Provider?

We will withhold appropriate federal and state taxes.

  1. We will provide worker compensation insurance and unemployment compensation insurance.
  2. We will pay the employer portion of the FICA taxes (Social Security & Medicare)

How do I get paid as a Direct Support Worker?

You will be provided with instructions on how to use the required Kansas Authenicare System by the person you work for.  Please be sure to follow the instruction provided and ensure you are reporting time worked in the appropriate manner.  Failure to use this system could result in delay of getting paid.  Pay Periods are listed on the 2021 Pay Schedule and Pay Day is every other Friday.  Tasks you perform will be listed on an Attendant Care Worksheet.  The person you work for will establish a work schedule with you. (Link to 2021 Pay Schedule)

What will I be paid as a DSW?

The Base Wage and Benefits for DSW’s is set by Waiver, contact LINK FMS Provider for specific rate.

How long is my application kept on file?

Applications are kept on file for 6 months. You must reapply at that time to keep your application active.

Background Checks:

Direct Support Workers are required to pass 4 State Mandated Background Checks prior to being hired as a Direct Support Worker and every 2 years. The background checks shall be paid for in advance by cash, cashier’s check or money order in the amount of $25.00.
